Tejashwi Yadav, the heir apparent to Lalu Prasad Yadav

Tejashwi Yadav the current leader of opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and also the youngest opposition leader in the country. But his journey into the world of politics has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. He did his schooling from D.P.S R.K Puram till class 9th.

Later, he dropped out to persue his career in cricket. His keen interest in cricket help him become the captain of his school team. He was later included in Delhi Dare Devils IPL team in 2008 and remained with them for five consecutive sessions.

But his luck proved elisive and he did not get further chance to play. However, he got a chance in Jharkhand Ranjhi team, there too he failed to make a mark and cound never be selected. And that was the end of his cricketing career.

Then, it was the time for him to inherit Politics from his family and in 2015 he became a first time MLA from Raghopur in Vaishali district. And few days later he went on to become Deputy cheif minister of Bihar at the age of 26. But, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with Lalu Yadav in July 2017 a few weeks after the CBI filed the case naming Tejashwi Yadav, making him loose his Deputy CM chair.

The Central Bureau of Investigation registered a case of corruption against Tejashwi Yadav, his father Lalu Prasad, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav, his mother Rabri Devi, and several other members of the family on 5 July 2017. On 27 July, the Enforcement Directorate registered another criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act of 2002.

The case involves three acres of land in Patna where a mall has been planned. Lalu Yadav has been charged with facilitating, as the country’s Railways Minister in 2006, a contract to a private company to run hotels, in exchange for the premium plot as bribe. The land was first transferred to the wife of a lawmaker of Mr Yadav’s party and finally to Mr Yadav’s wife and son Tejashwi at a dirt-cheap rate, the CBI says.

Tejashwi was named one of the conspirators, but argued repeatedly that he was very young when the land was acquired and cannot be blamed for a deal dating back to when he was “just a boy who hadn’t even sprouted a moonchh”.
But the biggest downfall came in his political and personal life when his fathe Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 14 years in jail by a special CBI court in connection with the fourth fodder scam case pertaining to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka treasury in the early 1990s.

Among all his siblings, Mr. Tejaswi is regarded as the heir apparent to Lalu Prasad. His elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav was a cabinet minister for Health in Government of Bihar. He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Mahua constituency as a member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in 2015 and among his seven sisters, the older Misa Bharti is a Rajya Sabha member.

Amidst all the controversy and criticism Tejaswi Yadav has led the RJD into new-age politics, where social media plays an important role in putting the party’s thoughts across. Earlier, his father Lalu Prasad was oft-quoted as saying yeh IT-YT kya hota hai? (what’s this IT-YT?) but later even Mr. Lalu Prasad started tweeting every day. It all happened with the political initiation of Mr. Tejaswi, who then pushed hard for the party’s makeover with the right mix of young and experienced. Today, he holds complete command over his party and takes major decisions.

For his sheer political understanding and ability to take everyone along, Mr. Tejaswi is seen as the chief minister-in-waiting.
